A major responsibility of the Division’s veterinarians and veterinary technicians is the health and well-being of all research animals on campus. Treatment of all animals must, by law, be under the supervision of a qualified veterinarian. Four veterinarians, one post-doctoral veterinarian and four veterinary technicians provide the bulk of the Division’s animal health care services. Veterinary technicians make rounds through all animal facilities on a regular basis to assess the health status of all animals. Sick, unthrifty, or abnormal animals are examined by our staff and necessary diagnostic procedures are undertaken. Findings will be discussed with the investigator and a course of action decided upon. These actions include:
  • Further clinical laboratory tests
  • Treatment of the condition
  • Necropsy of the animal, or sample animal
  • Euthanasia of the animal(s)

All costs incurred in the delivery of initial health care to acutely sick animals are covered in the per diem charges assessed to investigators. Costs of extensive care, additional diagnostic studies and treating iatrogenic conditions will be charged to investigators.

A. CONTACTS

Our Veterinary Technician Staff may be reached by calling 966-2906 or by paging 216-1235. The Veterinary Staff may be reached by calling 966-3111.

B. ANIMAL HEALTH PROBLEMS

Health problems may be reported by Division animal care staff during routine husbandry activities, spotted by Veterinary Technicians during periodic rounds through facilities, or discovered by researchers. Veterinary staff will examine reported animals and devise a treatment plan if necessary. Researchers will be consulted before any treatment is undertaken.

Veterinary staff may affix a removable colored dot on a sick animal cage card. Husbandry personnel may add a temporary "Sick Animal" card to alert veterinary staff. These items are important for tracking health problems, please do not remove them!
