All rodents purchased from commercial vendors are guaranteed free of viral and bacteria pathogens, as well as ecto and endoparasites. As a result the Division does not quarantine animals from commercial vendors, but monitors through sentinel animals (see below).

In addition to the quarantine period, the Division of Laboratory Animal Medicine maintains a "sentinel" program at UNC-CH. Each rack of rodents at UNC-CH houses one cage of sentinel animals that are used to monitor the overall health status of each animal room. DLAM personnel sample bedding from the surrounding cages on a weekly basis. DLAM tests these animals quarterly for viral and bacterial pathogens, as well as endo and ectoparasites. Click here to view the most recent health reports for your animal room. The table lists building, room number, species, serology results with date, parasitology results (pinworm and ectoparasites) with date of most recent testing and any important comments.

Routine health testing is not done on other species. Animals are purchased from vendors guaranteed free of problematical disease problems.
